RIP Daddy... Hiatus

Graduation May 2009. He was so happy. RIP Daddy!

I said I was coming back but unfortunatly I am taking a break again and I don't know for how long. Last night my dad passed away from natural causes. I am really hurt, torn, shocked... Just when I thought he was getting better... Its really hard losing a dad. I miss him so much. I have to stay strong though and I know he is at a better place right now, watching over me and my 2 brothers.

Its been so long since I last blogged. Its been almost 3 months. Within those 3 months so many things have happened. From moving to a new apartment to my father having a quadruple bypass surgery (he is still in the ICU but slowly getting better). So as you can see my life has been pretty much busy beyond belief. But I am so glad and happy to say I am back.

You have no idea how happy I am to go back to one of my favorite hobbies and thats reading (and blogging!). I have been gone for so long I feel lost! So I am asking you my fellow book reading buddies... What books do you recommend?

I am hoping everyone is doing well. I will be posting a review soon for "The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks. So happy to be back!

Book For Thought: Series

When I first got into book series, it started with The No. Ladies Detective Agency. I loved the idea of having to read the next book to see what happened next. You saw the characters develop throughout each series. Once I got to the last series at the time I became quite upset. I wanted to read more! But I had to wait. I was craving to read another series. I remember being introduced to Sue Grafton. And thats when I knew that I was officially hooked. What I loved about these series is time does not change. Sue Grafton continues to write as if it was still in the past with Cheeseburger being $1.29 and gas $1.75. Ints very intriguing and most series makes you ask for more. Now whenever I look for a new book to read I always look to see if its a series or when I find out a favorite book is going to be a series, I get excited.

Why I am waiting for this book: I have to admit, I am one that becomes interested in a book by looking at the cover. This is one of those books that when I saw the cover, I have to find out what this book is all about. And then when I read the synopsis... my jaw dropped. It sounds so interesting I just might pre-order the book.

Book Review: Betrayed

Review: Kalyss is a Heroine who went through a lot with her ex-husband Sam. After surviving though an abusive relationship, Kaylss has become stronger and smart. Alot of this has to do with what she has gone through 1000 years ago. Nine lifetimes, nine attempts and nine deaths in which is reincarnated. She gets one more chance to free up Dreux, the love of her life. The only problem is that everytime she reincarnates, she remembers less and less of her past lives. And everytime she was close to freeing Dreux, the evil Kai always found a way to kill her and the cycle starts all over again. Dreux character is very strong and sexy but he has a quality that I loved so much. He was understanding and a lot of patience. He believed in Kalyss and never doubted her ability to free him.

Jamie Leigh Hansen is a great writer. The character development is just amazing and the whole plot just keeps you reading. Through the book she goes through the past and the present to give the reader an idea of Kalyss and Dreux's history. You see the struggles Kalyss has gone through to free the one she loves. There are many twists and turns. You will feel happiness, fear, anger, sadness... Its a book filled with lots of emotions. I loved reading the journey through this war of undying love.

This is the first paranormal romance I've read. I never thought I would be interested in the genre but honestly it is not that bad. I became hooked after the first few chapters. Everything was just so interesting and I wanted to read more and more. The love Dreux has for Kalyss is so sweet and felt so real. If you are a fan of paranormal romance, I recommend this book to you.

Why I am waiting for this books: I love Alexander McCall Smith and I've always loved The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series. His writing, especially when he describes Africa, has always made me grow an interest into someday visiting Africa. I just love this series and I am so happy and looking forward to reading #11. Plus, Mma Ramotswe is a fierce women. I love the character!

Thought for the week: Ever since I started to work, I have been limited to reading maybe one book every week or two. It can be frustrating especially when I want to write a review. I remember being able to read two books, sometimes three books at a time. It allowed me to finish each book at a reasonable amount of time and move on to the next. Now I find myself reading less and less and my pile of books keeps growing and growing. Its hard when life just gets busier and busier. I could go back to reading two books at the same time but the whole thing with reading two or more books at a time, they have to be different genres. Reading two books of the same genre, I find myself mixing up the characters. I become confused. Not fun. So my question for you is, how many books do you read per week? And if you read more than 1 book at a time, are they the same genre?

Why I am waiting for this book: I read the synopsis and I just need to get this book. It goes through the thoughts and flashbacks of a 17 year old girl in a coma, who is fighting for her life. The cover I absolutely love. I just can't wait to get this book.

Why I am waiting for this book: Imagine not remembering what you did for a whole year. This book seem very suspenceful. Plus the cover is pretty cool.

The cops working the case want him out of the way, in case loyalty to his family and community makes him a liability. Faithful Place wants him out because he's a detective now, and the Place has never liked cops. Frank just wants to find out what happened to Rosie Daly-and he's willing to do whatever it takes, to himself or anyone else, to get the job done.

Why I am waiting for this books: Again suspenseful and quite interesting. I also love the book cover.

Review: Kate is a single mom who has fought and dealt with a lot in her life to get to where she is, a successful prosecutor. But her success turns into horror when she is in the middle of being caught hostage in a courtroom. In the end she comes out alive with the help of someone from her past, Mario. There was a catch to keeping her alive though, she was being blackmailed for a crime she witnessed.

Tom, a homicide detective, was at the scene of the shootout in the courtroom. Investigating the case, he ends up falling for Kate while trying to figure out what exactly happened in the courtroom. Tom begins to realize that Kate's story doesn't add up with the evidence. But Kate refuses to tell the truth. And no matter how many times Tom tried talking to her to get the truth and no matter how many times her life was in danger, she continued to lie to the one guy that could possibly help make this nightmare go away.

I expected so much more from this book. The beginning started off great. I couldn't put the book down. But once I got to the middle of the book I started to get bored. There was suspense but then I would come across descriptions after descriptions, I found myself skipping a few paragraphs just to get to the point. It was just too slow. Too wordy. I loved Tom's strong character. He is a man I would love to be around if I was in danger. Kate's son Ben was also a character to love. A very smart 9-year-old boy that is very protective of his mother. As for Kate, I found her character to be quite annoying.

Once everything started to uncover, it wasn't as intense as I thought it would be. I had a hard time finishing this book. Once I did, I was really disappointed with the ending. Everything wrapped up in just a few pages and I was left thinking "Thats it? Really?!" I honestly don't recommend this book to anyone.

Hiatus

Hello Everyone! You guys are probably wondering why I haven't been posting much lately here or on twitter. I had the work week from hell last week and I am slowly recovering. I will probably be in a small hiatus until Wednesday. Have to finish my 2-3 page Personal Goal statement for grad school and that is on top of my priority list as of now. Hope everything is going well for everyone. I will be reading blogs of course and commenting... just not posting until Wednesday. Thanks for understanding.

Blogger Update: Lack of Motivation

Blogger update are posts related to anything I want to talk about that may or may not be related to books. Actually, this post is related to writing.

As some of you know, I graduated from nursing school May 2009. I have been doing a little research and I decided to look up grad schools and apply. My goal has always been to become a Nurse Pracitioner in Women's Health. It is my passion to work in that area. I had decided on two school to apply for. Both request a Personal Goal Statement. This Personal Goal Statement will help determine whether I get into grad school or not. I want to be able to stand out.The problem is, I'm stuck. I don't know what to write. And I lack the motivation to write. (Or so I think I am lacking motivation because right now instead of writing this goal statement I am blogging.) I find it so hard to write about myself and my goals. I know my goals but I can't find the right words. The right words to stand out. Hopefully I get over this "writers block". I would like to submit this Personal Goal Statement by Monday and get the rest of the application process done. I need to find that motivation first. Maybe with that motivation the words will all come together. I hope.

My thoughts: Lies and deception caught my attention. The cover also screams "read me!". You shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I just love this cover. Its very intriguing.

Review: Ellen is a professional photographer in New York City who recently married her best friends brother Andy, a wealthy lawyer. Their relationship is described as perfect. Andy has all the qualities any woman could ask for. Her life overall was perfect. At least that what she thought until her encounter with Leo.

Leo, the first person she has ever fallen in love with. The One. The one that dumped her and left her heartbroken for many years and with unanswered questions. With this encounter Ellen agrees to form a friendship with him. But she begins to finds herself thinking about Leo and starts to question her relationship and her love for Andy and Leo. She even questions whether this is the life she is meant to be living or even yet, the life she really wants to be living. Emily goes through emotional turmoils with realization that she has never gotten over Leo.

Throughout the book you will find Ellen putting herself through situations which she knows are not right but its "something she has to do." She does however takes her marriage seriously, and her decisions are not made iratically. She puts much though to what she is going to do before she does it. At some points I did find myself a little frustrated with Ellen's decision. In the end though you will see why she did what she did and how it helped grow her relationship with Andy.

I found some parts of the book to be a bit slow. It took a while to build up. Once it build up, the ending came all at once. Everything was resolved quickly. Other than that I just love Emily Giffin's writing and her characters. Emily Giffin always brings realness and emotion to every character she writes. Overall it was a good book. I didn't love it but I did enjoy it.

Five Patients by Michael Crichton: My boyfriend read Next by Michael Crichton and really liked his style of writing. He wanted me to mooch this book for him so I did. Sounds really interesting. I read the first few chapters and I want to read more.

Bought:
Talk Nerdy to Me by Vicki Lewis Thompson (Romance): Love the title and love the book cover. I just had to give this book a chance. Plus it was only $1.50.

Betrayed by Jamie Leigh Hansen (Paranormal Romance): Also love the cover of this book. Paranormal books I don't normally read but I am going to give this book a try. Again, this book was only $1.50.

A chick lit with some suspense?! Heck yea! And the cover, its so adorable! Love it. Really looking forward to May 11th.

I just love mystery, suspence, thrillers. This will be the first book I read from this author and after a little research I will probably read his other books. Review: I did not know what to expect when I began to read “The Bachelorette Party” by Karen McCullah Lutz. The book cover and the title grabbed my attention. The synopsis finally won me over and I decided to give this book a try. And I am glad that I did.

Zadie is a high school teacher who was dumped and left at the alter by her famous soap star fiance. After this incident she swears off men. Wants nothing to do with them. While her friends and family try to convince her to start dating, she refuses to do such a thing. Though she does have a little secret attraction for a 19 year old model in which she fantasizes about and who happens to be one her students.

Zadie has a best friend Grey in which she confides in. She talks to him about pretty much everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. He surprises her by announcing that he is engaged to her cousin Helen, an uptight and perfect 28 year old virgin. This is a wedding Zadie is not looking forward to especially since its with a person whom she dislikes and is quite jealous of.

The novels focuses on the days before the wedding. Zadie is invited by Helen to the Bachelorette party. At first she was really hesitant. Not much fun is expected especially when the Bachelorette Party includes things like yoga, tea, shopping and other not so fun events. Grey encourages her to go and requests that she makes sure that Helen “loosens up” and has a great time. Once Zadie arrives to the Bachelorette party, it starts off quite boring. Thats until Zadie decides to change the schedule around and that is when the fun begins. Fun that ends up going completely wrong once Helen begins to drink. Slowly the truth comes out about the “not-so-sweet and innocent” Helen. Helens actions surprises Zadie and she is surprised even more when one of her college friends tells Zadie about her past. One event leads to another and Zadie find herself torn as to whether she should tell Grey that his soon-to-be wife is not the perfect and innocent person she portrays herself to be.

You will find yourself laughing throughout the whole book. From the beginning to end you will find McCullah Lutz witty and sarcastic humor. Each and everyone of the characters including all the ladies in attendance at the bachelorette party; were well characterized, highly entertaining and easily relatable. A wonderful combination of characters. What I loved about this book is how true these characters were. Especially Zadie, who is very sarcastic, witty, silly and fun. A character that you wish to have as a friend.

You will find some "raunchy" scenes throughout the book but that is what makes the book so much more entertaining. Well, thats if you don't mind that kind of stuff.

If you are a huge fan of chick lit and want a good laugh I highly suggest giving “The Bachelorette Party” a try. The writing style is fun. You won’t be able to put this book down. You will find unexpected twist and turns. Just great entertainment throughout.

My Love Story

I know Valentines Day was yesterday but I really wanted to share my little love story. Okay so maybe its not so little. Enjoy!

I met Joel during our Spring semester of 2008. We attended the same college. He was majoring in Physical Therapy and I was majoring in nursing. I was working at the library as work study. I would see him often at the library with a friend. His friend worked in the library with me. The interaction Joel and I had in the beginning was quite silly. The students that major in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing all take their classes in the same building. Nursing is one of the popular majors so there is a large number of us at school. Those that major in Physical Therapy get annoyed with the nursing students because we would take up the whole lobby during lunch. The silly interaction began when the guys thought it would be funny to start a Nursing vs. Physical Therapy war with me. Everytime they would see me they would say "Physical Therapist are better and smarter" and I would fight back of course! It was a fun little game we played.

Once in a while we would have a decent conversation that had nothing to do with our major. One day we were talking about candy and how people have strange rituals and habits when they eat certain candy bars. I was telling them that I had a bad habit eating the caramel on the Twix first and then the rest last. A couple of days later, Joel comes into the library and buys me a twix from the vending machine. This happened to be April Fools Day and the whole time I thought he was playing some prank on me or something. I even told him that he probably trying to poison me. He left the twix on the counter and said "I am going to leave this here. Its for you and you can grab it when you wish". After my boss came by and told me to grab the twix from the counter or she would take it and eat it herself, I grabbed it and put it in my bag. I told my friends about the situation and they all thought it was a cute gesture. They continued on saying that Joel possibly had a thing for me. I agreed but I told them that I was not really into him like that. The girls told me to give him a chance but I just ignored what they said. At the time I really was not into him and thought he was not my type. He was really tall and I always said to myself that I wouldn't date a guy over 6 feet tall. He is 6'4. He is also 8 years older than me and I always said that I wouldn't date someone 5 years older than me.

A couple of days went by and I found the twix in my bag. I laughed to myself and took a bit out of it. Realized he didn't poison me and then laughed at myself again for even thinking that. It had been a few days since the twix incident and I noticed he wasn't coming into the library as often and I found myself thinking about him and actually missing him. I thought it was weird and it was scaring me. That is when I realized that I might have a little thing for him. I wanted to get to know him more. His friend suggested that I send him an e-mail to his campus address and I did. I told him how I missed him and joke about the twix bar and also thanked him for it. It was really thoughful of him and the fact that he even remember the conversation made me realize that he was listening. Very important! I ended the email saying he should come back to the library and visit me. He e-mailed me back and he included his number. I sent him mine and we started talking over the phone. It was short conversations but they were interesting. Each day I got to know him more and more and I started to like him even more. In May after our finals I had a party and I invited him to come. He had a final the next day so I was not expecting him to come. When I saw him I was so excited. I gave him a hug and we started to talk and that is when I kissed him. Yup, I was the one that planted the first kiss! I was shocked that I had the courage to do that but I was so glad that I did because it felt great and perfect.

Over the summer we started to hang out. We went to the park, to the movies, or he would come to my place and hang out. I would cook him a nice meal and he would sometimes cook for me. Towards the end of the summer we were holding hands in public and pretty much acting like a couple. Before the fall semester of 2008 started I was scared that we would grow apart from each other. We both have really busy majors and busy schedules so I figured I wouldn't see much of him. I was afraid that it was just going to be a summer fling and thats it. When the semester started (September, 2008) he invited me to his best friends engagement party. I called my mom really excited about the situation and she kept telling me that this was huge! I met his best friends and they all liked me. Even one of them said "I know you are the right one for him. You are smart, you are in school for nursing and you have so much going for yourself" That made me smile.

On January 01, 2009 Joel surprised me and asked me to be his girlfriend. We have been together for a year now. We both graduated from college and starting our careers and soon will be moving in together. He makes me the happiest girl in the world every single day. He is a wonderful person and I am so lucky to have him as my boyfriend. He is caring, funny, smart and very supportive and that is the type of person I need in my life. I am so thanksful for having him in my life. I couldn't ask for anyone better. And to think, it all started with a twix.

Book Review: Little Earthquakes

Review: I was really excited to read this book especially after reading "Good In Bed". This book had a lot of potential. At first I was hooked but after a while I found myself to get a little bored with the characters. I felt they were a bit one-demensional and not very likable. Not one character really stood out for me. I found it very hard to finish.

The book follows the lives of four women who come together and experience mother-hood for the first time. There is Becky, an overweight chef who has a mother-in-law from hell. Yet she portrays the image of a perfect mom. Kelly is a demanding, materalistic and an overachiever. She is all about labels. She becomes annoyed with the presence of her husband after he has been laid-off. She was never satisfied with anything and after finding out her husbands possible future career change, she becomes upset because its a low pay career. Ayinde is a stay-at-home mom married to a famous basketball player. Boring character with really not much to say. And finally Lia who has a horrible tragedy which lead her to leave California and move to Philadelphia leaving her husband behind and clueless of where abouts. The book introduces her as a stalker. Following Becky around and leaving little baby gifts in her mailbox and purse. Whats even scarier is that they all become great friends in the end. Stalker included.

Some areas in the book were a bit unrealistic and over-dramatic. Cheating, health issues, job loss, mother-in-law issues, death. All this in one book. It was interesting in the beginning but then it became repetetive and boring at the end.

Most who have read this book recommend it to moms. After reading "Little Earthquakes", I wouldn't recommend this at all to a mom especially a new mom. This book really highlighted more the negative side of pregnancy and the negative effects it can have on your life and your spouse. Very little joy is shown about motherhood.

Overall I was a bit disappointed with "Little Earthquakes". I will continue to read books by Jennifer Weiner because I do like her writing style but I don't recommend this book to anyone. One of my least favorites from Weiner.

I read this synopsis and I just can't wait to read this book. I am a fan of Jodi Picoult especially after reading A Sister's Keeper. This book just sounds like its going to be a very powerful and emotional book. With an increasing number of children diagnosed with autism I think this book will be helpful in seeing the life of a family with a child with autism. It involves medical and legal drama which I am always interested in reading.

As you might know I am a Registered Nurse. Some days can be really stressful and I use reading as a way to relieve stress. So I dedicated every Saturday to be "Share with Me Saturday". Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson

Are you into love stories? Do you like a little suspense? This book is for you. I am a big James Patterson fan but I must say that this book is my favorite by him. From beginning to end, you will find yourself hooked. You won't be able to put the book down. It reminds me of a fairy tell. If you like "cute" stories, then this book is for you. Another thing about this book is that it makes you think. Definely a tear jerker. It is also a fast read kind of book. Gets right to the point. Good book for those that want a quick read. Give Sunday's at Tiffany a try and let me know what you think! I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Review: The Quickie is by the wonderful James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. When I first saw the book I must admit, the cover is what grabbed my attention. Its a quite sexual cover and it just intrigued me. I was even more intrigued when I started to read the first few pages. The story begins with Lauren a detective who cheats on her husband after seeing him go into a hotel with a beautiful young woman. Lauren's life turns for the worst when she witnesses a crime. Believe me, this is a book that once you start reading, you can't put it down. Thanks to this book, I've become a huge James Patterson fan. If you are into suspense, thrillers, and action... then this book is for you! The only disappointment was that I expected a little bit more erotic scences. It does include a little erotica. But don't worry, its nothing too detailed and its pretty short. The cover is as intense it gets when it comes to some sexual content. Other than that, I do recommend this book.

What is this Endless Reading?

Endless Reading is a blog dedicated to my favorite thing. Books! Each day the blog will have specific themes (which might change after a while). For example, Mondays might be Mailbox Monday and that is when I post books I have bought and/or books I have recieved in the mail from book swaps. I also give reviews on books I read. All reviews are my opinion. You will also find here giveaways, new releases, and blog spotlights. As time goes on I will think of more to post about. I will try my best to not write anything here about my personal life.

Who are you?

So glad you care to know about me! My name is Laisa and I am 24 years old. I am a Registered Nurse. I currently work in a Women's Health clinic. Hoping to go back to school soon to get my Masters. Would like to be a nurse midwife and a nurse practitioner in Women's Health. When I am not at work playing the role of a nurse, I LOVE to read. One of my favorite things to do is take a trip to Barnes & Nobles. Love having that great book in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. My favorite day is Wednesday because that is when my boyfriend goes out with his male friends and I have the place to myself. My time to read and relax.

What type of books do you read and what makes you choose a book?

I pretty much read just about anything. If it grabs my attention, I will read it. And by grabbing my attention I mean if I read the synopsis and the first chapter sounds interesting, I will buy. I also trust my fellow book reviewers and like to read their opinions.

Who are your favorite authors?

I like the following: James Patterson, Jennifer Weiner, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, Sue Grafton, Emily Giffin... Just to name a few.
